Duan Silian (Chinese: 段思廉; pinyin: Duàn Sīlián; Wade–Giles: Tuan4 Ssu1-lien2, 1027–1108), temple name Xingzong (興宗) and posthumous name Emperor Xiaode (孝德皇帝, "The filial-virtuous emperor"), was the eleventh emperor of the Bai empire Dali, reigning from 1044 to 1075.[1]

Biography

Dali Xingzong Duan Silian (?-?) was the eleventh emperor of Dali Kingdom, and belonged to the ancestral line of Duan Siping, who reigned from 1044 to 1075. In 1044, Xianguo Yue Gao Zhisheng launched a coup, abolished Tianming Emperor Duan Suxing, and proclaimed his grandson Duan Silian, who supported Duan Siping, as emperor. In this way, the throne of Dali Kingdom finally returned to Taizu Duan Siping. After Duan Silian took office, Gao Zhisheng held power with his support, and his influence was significant. In 1063, the nobleman Yang Yunxian launched a rebellion. Duan Silian was unable to suppress the rebellion and had to request Gao Zhisheng to send troops. Gao Zhisheng took the opportunity to expand his territory and forced the emperor to seal him as a prince. Diplomatically, Nong Zhigao, the leader of the Guangxi and Guangdong provinces who fled the army to Dali, was beheaded and presented to the Northern Song Dynasty. Duan Silian used five reign titles, namely Bao'an, Zheng'an, Zhengde, Baode and Minghou. In 1075 he was forced to become a monk. After his death, the temple name was Xingzong, and he was posthumously honored as Emperor Xiaode.
