Duncan A. Buell
Duncan A. Buell (born October 17, 1950) is an American mathematician and computer scientist whose research and professional work have included computational number theory, high-performance computing, information retrieval, digital humanities, and election data analysis. He is Professor Emeritus at the University of South Carolina, where he previously held the NCR Chair in Computer Science and Engineering.[1] He has also worked in government research environments, including the Institute for Defense Analyses’ Center for Computing Sciences.[2] [3]
Early life and education
Duncan A. Buell was born in Detroit, Michigan, United States. He received a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from the University of Arizona in 1971[4], a Master of Arts in mathematics from the University of Michigan in 1972[4], and a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Illinois Chicago in 1976. His doctoral specialization was in number theory.[1][5][6]
Career
After completing his Ph.D., Buell worked as a research associate at Carleton University from 1976 to 1977. He then held assistant professor positions at Bowling Green State University from 1977 to 1979 and Louisiana State University from 1979 to 1985, where he subsequently became a tenured associate professor.[2][7]
During this period, his research focused on number theory, algebraic structures, and computational methods in mathematics. His publications addressed topics including quadratic fields, class numbers, and computational aspects of algebraic number theory.[8][9]
From 1986 to 2000, Buell worked at the Center for Computing Sciences, an institution operated by the Institute for Defense Analyses. The center, formerly known as the Supercomputing Research Center, conducted computational research in support of the U.S. National Security Agency. [2][5]
His work involved high-performance computing, parallel computation, and large-scale algorithmic implementations. He also participated in research projects involving large-scale computations, including one described as the largest computation performed in the history of the U.S. intelligence community.[10]
In 2000, Buell joined the University of South Carolina as Professor of Computer Science and Engineering.[1] He served as department chair for nine years and as interim dean of the College of Engineering and Information Technology (2005–2006).[11]
