Background
Verrett grew up in California , and has stated that his mother is of Norwegian-Indian descent and that his father is of Haitian descent, having been born and bred in New Orleans.
Derek Verrett, as he was born in Sacramento, California, in 1974 and grew up in nearby Foster City, is a sixth-generation shaman. As printed in Vanity Fair he claims that some of his elders had powers but chose to stay away from them in order to follow more traditional paths. Durek claims his great-grandmother was a medicine woman who grew up in Ghana before fleeing to Haiti and eventually settling in New Orleans. Durek also claims her son, Durek’s grandfather, had powers too, as did his father, but they were traditional Seventh-Day Adventists.
Durek grew up in what he says was an affluent, primarily white neighborhood. His parents divorced when he was three, he lived with his dad, a pious construction entrepreneur, and his stepmother.
It was during this time Durek claimed to have some early supernatural experiences such as seeing his ancestors. Durek has claimed he suffered early sexual abuse at the hands of a babysitter and this led him down a dark path of drink and drugs. His early life can be characterised as a battle between self-destructive tendencies and what he now realises was a spiritual journey in understanding the latent shamanic forces within him. A big part of this was trying to understand what he was supposed to do with them. Durek eventually realised he had been given these powers to help people which is what he has been doing since.
Durek also had an early career as a model as well as appearing on television shows. Vanity Fair summed this up as 'an eclectic early career and this helped propel his brand of new age shamanism into celebrity circles as he’d grown up partly in that world.'[2]
Shamanic Career
Durek’s website describes[3] his style of shamanic teachings as being ‘no nonsense’. Durek claims to demystify spirituality by making it attainable and understandable for not only the layman, but also for the more spiritually advanced, and everyone in between. Durek states that his 'true mission is to bring the ancient practice of shamanism to the mainstream, helping people to “get lit” by cultivating love and acceptance of themselves and others.' [4]
Personal Life
Durek has been linked to many high profile individuals throughout many mainstream publications including The New York Times[5], The LA Times [6], Glamour magazine [7] and many more.[8] These range from celebrities such as Leann Rimes, Nina Dobrev and Gwyneth Paltrow, to tech giants like Dave Asprey of Bulletproof Coffee.[9]
Much has been made in the Norwegian press of Durek’s relationship with Princess Märtha Louise of Norway. Many Norwegian’s are not happy with their national figure being linked to someone who many in Norway see as a ‘charlatan’ however both Durek and Princess Martha have responded to this negative perception openly and publicly in articles ranging from the New York Times[10] to the many lifestyle magazines in which he is regularly featured. [11]
