Dusan Kotur

Dušan Kotur (Serbian Cyrillic: Душан Котур; Crkveni Bok, near Sunja, then part of Austria-Hungary, 10 August 1870 - Belgrade, Serbia, Kingdom of Yugoslavia, 9 March 1936) was a Serbian composer, pedagogue and writer.He is best remembered as a promoter of Serbian choral societies. Today, Dušan Kotur's compositions and those of his Serbian contemporaries as well as the compositions of Russian composers are sung by numerous church choirs wherever Serbs live.

Biography

After graduating from the high school in Novi Sad and the Grande école of Saint Arsenije in Sremski Karlovci, Dušan Kotur went on to study composition at the famed Prague Conservatory.

Kotur was the first regular music teacher in Sremski Karlovci and choirmaster of the Grande école of Saint Arsenije's theological choir. He contributed much to raising the music culture in Vojvodina and neighbouring countries, Serbia, Montenegro, and the Slavic lands then under the Ottoman Empire. As an excellent connoisseur of church music, he based his spiritual compositions on traditional Karlovac chant, not deviating far from the original. He also composed secular choral compositions. His participation in the magazine Brankovo ​​kolo was very lively, in which, in addition to directly assisting in editing and administration, he published a large number of his critiques, notes and articles on contemporary Serbian composers and on Czech cultural issues.
