Dustin D Hyland
"Dustin Hyland is an author, historian, and a twenty-three-year veteran of the United States Navy. Most of his career was spent aboard numerous warships, fostering in him a passion for the sea. He holds a BA in Business Administration from Columbia College, as well as three graduate degrees from Liberty University, an MBA, an MA in Professional Writing, and an MFA in Creative Writing."[1]
Early Life
Born in the Twin Cities in July 1980 alongside his twin brother, he is the eldest of four siblings. He was raised in Cumberland, Wisconsin, and graduated from Cumberland High School in 1999. After completing a year of architectural studies at WITC Rice Lake, he enlisted in the United States Navy.
His first shipboard assignment was aboard the USS Carl Vinson during the events of September 11, 2001. Throughout his naval career, he also served aboard the USS Ingraham and the USS Gunston Hall, and completed shore assignments at Great Lakes Recruiting Center, Balboa Hospital, and Naval Station Thermont. Following twenty-three years of military service, he retired from the U.S. Navy in 2023 as a Senior Chief and transitioned into the private sector.[2]
"He served within the Ship’s Serviceman (SH) rating community (now known as Retail Services Specialist), managing essential shipboard morale, retail operations, and logistics vital to a warship's daily readiness and crew endurance. Advanced Leadership Training: As he advanced into the senior non-commissioned officer ranks, he was selected for and completed the rigorous U.S. Navy Senior Enlisted Academy in 2019. This specialized academy focuses on strategic communication, national security affairs, and high-level military leadership."[3]
Writings
His debut novel is Unsinkable Lights: Charles H. Lightoller's Tale of Hope & Survival (Released February 2026) Another two books are on the way to publication, both having todo with Ocean Liners and Naval History.
Education
Graduated from Cumberland High School, attended WITC Rice Lake for a year, While in the Navy obtained an MBA Degree, an MA in Professional Writing, and an MFA in Creative Writing all from Liberty University.
