Dusty Watt also known as Dr. Allan Charles Watt (born 16 August 1958 in Waihi, New Zealand) is a New Zealand independent consultant in digital forensics and a singer-songwriter who has released his first album Ghost of the Somme in 2015.
Allan Charles Watt joined the NZ Army Territorial Reserve Force in 1978 and 1980 transferred to the Regular Force. He served a total time of 17.5 years combined service in the Regular and Reserve Forces. He further served with the NZ Police as a sworn officer for around nine years, aftter which he attended University and completed numerous qualifications, the highest being a PhD in Forensic Computing. He lectures at the Australian Defense Force Academy (ADFA) Canberra, in the area of Digital Forensics, as well as running his own Digital Forensics Business.[1]
Forensic works[edit]
Watt served both in the New Zealand Army Regular Force and the NZ Police as a sworn Police Officer, for a combined period of 18 years, most of his Police service was as an intelligence analyst. On leaving the NZ Police he formed his own business in digital forensics which he operated for 10 years prior to moving to Australia in 2008. On arrival in Sydney he commenced work as the Head of e.forensics, for e.law International, a Corporate Litigation Support firm and in June 2011, he took a position with the NSW Police Force, State Electronic Evidence Branch as an Electronic Evidence Specialist. In 2013, he commenced as the Cyber Program Coordinator /Lecturer at the Centre for Policing, Intelligence and Counter Terrorism, Macquarie University and then in 2015 returned to the industry as an independent consultant in Digital Forensic matters for both for Public or Private sector agencies. He has completed over 1000 Digital Forensic investigations, for either Public or Private sector agencies. In 2014 he was appointed to the INTERPOL World Cyber advisory panel.[2]
In 2008 he completed a master's degree, area of Research was Critical Infrastructure Ready Reaction to Cyber Terrorism. In 2012 Dr Watt completed a PhD with the University of South Australia area of research was Trafficking and Concealment of Child Abuse Material. He is a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) and a Certified Forensic Computer Examiner (CFCE). He continues to conduct further research into digital evidence capturing for Child Abuse Material and Human Trafficking of children. He has published numerous articles and has spoken at many conferences, both local and international.[3]
In 2013 his evidence was heard before the Privy Council, London, in an historic murder appeal and was accepted by them as an expert.[4][5][6][7][8]
Ghost of the Somme[edit]
At age 12 whilst attending the early years of high school, with a group of others attended guitar lessons and soon realised he had a natural aptitude for the instrument. Apart from a few talent quests in his younger years and the odd Karaoke appearance, until now has never written any music or performed on a stage as a musician. Inspired by his maternal Grandfather Phillip Charles McBarron, who was shot and wounded in the fields of the Somme in August 1918, in 2014 Allan commenced writing songs in commemoration of the 100 years of the ANZACs involvement in the Great War. He wrote the tunes and lyrics for all the songs on the album and then gave them to Leon Berger who turned them into music.[9][10]
