Dutch protocol

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Dutch protocol is a clinical protocol for providing gender-affirming care to transgender youth. The protocol is developed in the 1990s at the Center of Expertise on Gender Dysphoria at Amsterdam UMC in the Netherlands.

History

The protocol was developed in the 1990s by a team at Amsterdam UMC's gender clinic, led by Peggy Cohen-Kettenis, Henriette Delemarre-van de Waal, Annelou de Vries and Thomas D. Steensma. Its creation was motivated by the clinical challenge of treating adolescents experiencing severe gender dysphoria. The researchers aimed to prevent the development of irreversible secondary sex characteristics, which cause significant distress and can necessitate more invasive surgeries later in life.
