Early Life[edit]
Dwayne was born in Orlando, Florida, and raised in one of the first self-governing all-black municipalities in the United States: Eatonville, Florida. At two years of age, his father James Bryant divorced his mother, leaving her to care for their six children. As a result of Dwayne’s absent father, he got into trouble as a youth and was considered a bully.[3]
Fortunately for Dwayne, his mother’s (Martha Bryant) strict Christian principles, and strong desire for education governed the household. In ninth grade, Dwayne’s World History teacher, Mrs. Barbara Bey taught world history with an African centered curriculum. Exposing Dwayne’s mind to ancient African cultures inspired him to excel academically. His desire for academic excellence terminated his desire to bully others; instead, his thirst for knowledge and self-identity inspired his thoughts and actions. He often said, “a slave doesn’t act like a king and a king doesn’t act like a slave. “I chose to be King”, said Dwayne.
While in high school, Dwayne was in the symphonic and marching band at Winter Park High School. He worked at Taco Tico and eventually held an internship with the Orlando State’s Attorney’s office. Due to his leadership and academics, he was in the Social Studies Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society. He was an officer in the National Honor Society, served as the first African American President of the Florida State Spanish Conference, was awarded an internship in Washington DC with Congressman Bill McCollum, and served as a mentor at the Callahan Community Center in Orlando, Florida.[4]
Career[edit]
Florida International University[edit]
Due to his outstanding academics and student leadership, Dwayne received a full academic scholarship to Florida International University. While at FIU Dwayne was on the Dean's List, Student Government Vice-President, Homecoming King, Advisor to the President, and won numerous student leadership awards, including Outstanding Sophomore and Junior.
Johnson & Johnson[edit]
After graduating from FIU, Dwayne began his corporate career with Johnson & Johnson. Due to his innate ability to increase profitability and sales within his multi-million dollar territories, he was promoted and relocated three times within a five-year career. While serving as an Account Manager, Dwayne volunteered countless hours speaking to inner-city students in various schools in Miami, Detroit, St. Louis, and Chicago. After receiving a letter from a student, Sharone Hopkins, sharing the impact Dwayne had on his life, he asked God to reveal his Purpose in life.[5]
“Go into the Schools” Dwayne received Divine Revelation, shortly after that, resigning from a lucrative career with Johnson & Johnson in 1997 and formed Inner Vision International on January 21, 1997.[6]
Social Entrepreneur[edit]
Understanding his life’s Purpose, Dwayne formed Inner Vision International whose mission is to motivate, educate, and inspire individuals to achieve their maximum potential in their personal lives and the communities in which they live.[7]
Dwayne piloted a mentoring program on Chicago’s Southside at Corliss High School in 1999. That year, Corliss had a 10-year high graduation rate along with an 8-year high reading and math TAP (Test of Academic Proficiency) scores. Due to his demonstrated results partnering with Corliss High School, Chicago Public Schools extended a contract for Inner Vision to provide programming at its Academic Preparatory Schools (APCs), where the average student was 16 years of age in the 8th grade. Within three years, the APC’s graduation rates rose from 45% to over 80%.[8]
As a result of Dwayne’s leadership, Inner Vision has provided direct mentoring services to over 30,000 students primarily in Illinois, Florida, and Tennessee. Dwayne and his team of educational consultants developed a highly effective Social Emotional Learning curriculum entitled, The Vision™, teaching student leadership, and life skills development.[9]
After the height of Covid-19, Inner Vision began providing online learning to various Illinois, Florida, and Tennessee school districts.[10]
Concerned about the direction the nation was heading and the expressed fear of police by his students, Dwayne began engaging police departments in hopes of finding a solution to improve police and community relations. Dwayne has provided police and community engagements with the Chicago Police Department, KENT Police Department, FBI National Academy – Washington Chapter, and the Port of Seattle Police.[11][12][13]
He has spoken on numerous college campuses where he motivates students to discover their Purpose during their college careers.[14]
