E=M6 is a French scientific literacy television program broadcast on M6 since February 10, 1991 and presented by Mac Lesggy. The program focuses on the deciphering of the daily lives of French people from a scientific point of view based on topics such as food, the human body, technologies, and energy. Each issue is devoted to a subject that it explains through reports.
As of 2022, E=M6 is the oldest scientific literacy program in the French audiovisual media landscape currently being broadcast.
History
In 1990, Mac Lesggy and Nicolas Goldzahl, both agronomic engineers with degrees from the Institut national agronomique Paris Grignon, took part in a competition for young television talent organized by the Carat Espace academy. They were selected by the jury, which included Nicolas de Tavernost and Jean Drucker (both of whom held the deputy general manager and CEO positions at M6 respectively at the time). Encouraged by the latter, they developed a science show project called Science Tonic. They pooled their salaries, 20,000 francs per month each, to be able to shoot a pilot in the summer of 1990. Not having the means to hire an actor for the presentation, it was Mac Lesggy who went in front of the camera. Thomas Valentin, the director of program purchases for M6, was not convinced by Mac Lesggy's performance and asked for a second try. Competing with a project by the brothers Igor and Grichka Bogdanoff, the two beginners were finally chosen thanks to their communicative enthusiasm and a lower production cost. The channel renamed the show E=M6, in reference to the name of the channel and to Albert Einstein's famous E=mc² equation, and ordered six 26-minute episodes. To produce them, Mac Lesggy and Nicolas Goldzahl founded their production company, VM Productions, which later became VM Group.
