E-motion Hybrid, commonly referred to as e-Motion, is a marine engineering company that supplies hybrid propulsion systems to the marine industry.

History and overview[edit]

Michele Maggi, the third generation in the Maggi family’s 80-year-old diesel marine motor business, founded e-Motion in 2018.[1][2] It is based in La Spezia, Italy and Miami, Florida.[3][4]

In 2006, Maggi introduced the first hybrid system installed on the Ferretti Group’s Mochi Long-Range 23-meter yacht. By 2015, the marine and shipbuilding industry started to accept the concept of marine electric propulsion, after the installation of e-Motion parallel hybrid system in the Sanlorenzo shipyards’ SL106 AND SL86' yachts. Later, the system was also installed in super-yacht lines as well as Tankoa’s 50-meter Bintador and Perini Navi’s 47-meter E-volution.[5][6]

Engineering[edit]

To build parallel hybrid marine systems, the company assembles the e-motion electric motor with electromagnetic clutch to a marine diesel engine, builds variable speed generators made with permanent magnet alternators and double integrated inverters, the lithium battery pack including battery management system, the control panel, the panel for energy distribution and a power management system. The system can be used in electrical propulsion allowing silent navigation and zero carbon dioxide and NOx emission.[1][7][8] It can also be used in diesel electric propulsion and full diesel propulsion modes. The company also develops a serial hybrid system which has five functional modes.[2]
