E.B. Allen
E.B. Allen (born January 17, 1936) is a poet, historian, former coal miner and UMWA organizer from Eastern Kentucky. Allen is best known for his participation in the "Brookside Strike" in 1973 documented in the Oscar-winning documentary Harlan County, USA.[1]

Early Life[edit]
Allen was born in a two-room log house in Rockcastle County, Kentucky to Virgil Allen and Katie Katherine May in 1936.[2] He was the oldest of 13 children.[2] After completing 8th grade, he dropped out of school to work in a coal mine Leslie County, Kentucky. He worked in the coal mine until he was 17 years-old an enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.
Military Service[edit]
On his 17th birthday in 1953, Allen hitchhiked to Somerset, Kentucky and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps to fight in the Korean War. He went to bootcamp in Parris Island, South Carolina. Just after he finished his infantry training, the Korean Armistice Agreement ended the Korean War. Instead of being sent to Korea, he was sent to Camp Fuji in Japan, where the United States maintained a strong presence following the Occupation of Japan.[2][3]
