E.I. Cherian[edit]
Edayil Itticheriya Cherian (E. I. Cherian M.L.C) known as Edayil Vadhyar in Malayalam was an Indian scholar, educator, historian, a social reformer and a polyglot who lived in the late 19th Century in Kerala, India.
In a time when education in Kerala, India was facing obstacles, E.I. Cherian established 15 schools in the nearby towns of his hometown in Kerala.
Biography[edit]
Born as Edayil Itticheriya Cherian on September 27, 1874 in the town of Omallur in Pathanamthitta District Kerala as the 7th child to Itticheriya of Omallur and of Chakkalayil Mariyamma of Nannuvakaadu.
In a time when obtaining basic education was very difficult, he walked for several kilometers every day to attend a school that was established by the Anglican missionaries. He excelled in his education and became a polyglot later in his life, acquiring several languages, including English, Tamil, Sanskrit, and Suriyani. He became active in the cultural and social areas during his time. He sought to make contributions to society in education by establishing schools, considering his own experiences in obtaining an education.
The state of Kerala in India is known for its high educational attainment. However, in the late 19th century this was not the case. The education system that existed in the state was not well established, and access to education at that time was very difficult for those who were able to get it.
To advance the youth, he started the YMCA of Omallur and created and organized a committee for the youth of the area. His numerous contributions to society did not go unnoticed. He was selected to the Sree Moolam Popular assembly by the ruling King for the Kingdom of Travencore at the time
