E. S. Padmakumar is an Indian space scientist serving as the Director of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR (SDSC SHAR), one of the primary launch centres of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).[1] [2][3][4][5][6][7]He previously served as the Director of the ISRO Inertial Systems Unit (IISU) in Thiruvananthapuram.[8][9][10][11][12]

Early life and education

He holds a Master of Engineering (M.E.) degree in System Science and Automation from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru.[1][13]

Career

Padmakumar joined the Indian Space Research Organisation in September 1986.[1] His career has included work in mission design, guidance and control, hardware-in-loop simulations, avionics, flight software, and ground systems associated with launch operations.[1][4]

He has contributed to several ISRO missions, including the Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle (ASLV), PSLV missions, LVM3 missions, the Mars Orbiter Mission, Aditya-L1 and Chandrayaan-3.[14] [15][16][17]He has also chaired Flight Readiness Reviews (FRRs) for missions such as LVM3 OneWeb-1, LVM3 OneWeb-2, Chandrayaan-3, SSLV, RLV and PSLV.[1]

Gaganyaan Programme

Padmakumar contributed to the development of the Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) system for abort detection in India's Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme and participated in the development of the PS4 Orbital Experimental Module (POEM).[18]

Leadership roles

Padmakumar served as Director of the ISRO Inertial Systems Unit (IISU) from July 2023 to July 2025.[19] He assumed charge as Director of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR on 1 August 2025.[1]
