ENPULSION is a manufacturer of small-satellite electric propulsion systems for the Nano- and Microsatellite market. The company is based in Wr. Neustadt, Austria and opened its semi-automated production facility in 2018[1]. Their goal is to enable satellite companies to effectively propel spacecraft without moving parts by offering custom propulsion solutions using their unique modular pre-qualified building blocks.

ENPULSION has its production facility in Wr. Neustadt, Austria and its business development office in Silicon Valley, CA had been supported by the Lower Austrian High-Tech Incubator accent[2] and in 2017 was able to secure seed funding by the AWS Seed as well as from the EU Horizon 2020 program[3] worth around €1,8 Mio. Three months later ENPULSION closed its first VC funding in the total value of 600,000€.

ENPULSION grew four people in autumn 2017 to 23 by the end of 2018. ENPULSION has sold more than 40 propulsion systems to international customers and has secured a financing round in the amount of 2.7 Million € to scale up its production capacity to cover the increasing global demand.

Technology[edit]

Field-emission Electric Propulsion technology is an advanced electrostatic propulsion concept of an ion engine that uses liquid metal as a propellant. A FEEP drive system consists of an emitter and an accelerator electrode[4]. A potential difference in the order of kV is applied between the two, creating a strong electric field at the top of the metal surface. The interaction of electrical force and surface tension creates surface instabilities that lead to Taylor cones on the liquid surface. At sufficiently high applied field values, ions are extracted from the apex of the cone by field evaporation or similar mechanisms which are then accelerated to high speeds.
