Earlene Cruz
Earlene Cruz is the founder and executive director of Kitchen Connection Alliance (KCA), an organization that works with the United Nations,[1] governments, and partners around the world to help educate and promote the development of a better food system for human and planetary health, with a deep respect to local cultures.[2]
She also served as a Youth Representative and Steering Committee Member to the United Nations Department of Global Communications, an adjunct professor at the NYU School of Global Public Health, and serves on the board of several educational and nonprofit organizations.[3].[4]
She has been engaged in public debate on issues related to food insecurity and climate change, working closely with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change[5]
Early life and education
Earlene Cruz was born in New Jersey, United States to a family of restaurateurs.[6]
Cruz graduated from Seton Hall University with a Bachelor's degree in International Business and French Studies. She worked at the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in New York supporting Film and Bilingual Programs[7]. She then enrolled in the Institute for Shipboard Education where she spent two Semesters at Sea, her experiences abroad redirecting her plans to pursue law school for human rights in favour of a career in food sustainability and cultural exchange. She went on to obtain a Master's degree in Social Entrepreneurship and Food Studies from New York University. During her time at university, she worked under the direction of Dr. Jennifer Berg to develop research understanding the intricacies of global to local food cultures. [8]
In January 2016, Cruz was recognized as a James Beard National Scholar. In the same month, she was nominated to be Young Leader by the United Nations Secretary General's Envoy on Youth.
Kitchen Connection Alliance
In 2012, Cruz founded the Kitchen Connection Alliance with the goal of promoting food education and sustainability.[9]
The Kitchen Connection Alliance, as featured on the New York Times[10], works with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the UN Department of Global Communications. The organization also has the mission to educate the next generation of leaders—children and youth—on becoming advocates and changemakers for priority issues on the UN agenda.[11][12]
