Introduction[edit]

Earlybird Venture Capital is a Venture Capital firm.[1]. Their focus lies primarily on investing in early stage tech companies across Continental Europe[1]. The firm was founded in 1997 and currently has four office locations in Berlin, Munich, Cologne, and Istanbul. To this point, Earlybird has around 1 billion euros of assets under management, seven IPOs and 22 trade sales[2]. Investments include N26, UiPath, Shapeshift, Smava, NFON and Interhyp, among others[3].

History[edit]

Earlybird Venture Capital was founded in 1997 in Hamburg by Hendrik Brandis, Roland Manger, Rolf Mathies and Christian Nagel. One year after Earlybird was founded, a second office was opened in Munich. After residing in Hamburg for 15 years, the company relocated to Berlin Mitte in 2012[4]. Subsequently, Earlybird also started to focus on eastern Europe, which resulted in the launch of their third office in Istanbul in 2013[5].

In the first four generations, Earlybird invested in digital and health technologies. Ultimately, they started to separate into three different funds, starting with the Digital West Fund in 2012, the Digital East Fund in 2013[5] and the Health Tech Fund in 2016[6].

Furthermore, in 2016 Earlybird merged with the Berlin-based early stage venture firm “Heilemann Ventures”, founded by Fabian and Ferry Heilemann[7].

Today, Earlybird has one billion euros of assets under management[8], invested in around 120 companies and exited seven companies in IPOs and 22 trade sales[9].
