Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center
Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) is a research center at the University of Maryland, College Park. It is a joint center between the UMD Departments of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science, Geology, and Geographical Sciences in cooperation with the Earth Sciences Directorate at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)’s Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC).[1] ESSIC also administers the Cooperative Institute for Satellite Earth System Studies (CISESS), a joint center established through a cooperative agreement with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to support satellite research focused on weather and water forecasting models and predictions.[2]
In 2008, ESSIC relocated from the UMD campus to the UMD Discovery District research park, becoming its first tenant. This improved the collaborative opportunities within ESSIC as well as with NOAA, whose Center for Weather and Climate Prediction (NCWCP) is housed in an adjacent research park building.
History[edit]
In 1993, a cooperative agreement between the NASA GSFC Laboratory for Atmospheres (LA) and the UMD Department of Meteorology, established the Joint Center for Earth System Science (JCESS). JCESS enabled the research and expertise at GSFC to be used to enhance the education and research at the University of Maryland to benefit NASA's mission(s) in Earth sciences.
In 1995, negotiations were begun to build on the success of JCESS and, specifically, to broaden its scope to include other areas of Earth System Science relating more comprehensively to the research goals of the Earth Sciences Directorate of the NASA / GSFC and those of UMCP. In keeping with this new thrust, it was decided to name this new center ESSIC. On September 14, 1999, a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) formally establishing ESSIC was signed by Dr. C.D. Mote, Jr., President, UMCP and Mr. A.V. Diaz, Director of NASA / GSFC.[3]
In 2017, NASA awarded ESSIC a $64.8 million five-year cooperative agreement that allowed the center to continue its research. This was considerably higher than ESSIC’s 2012 cooperative agreement with NASA, which granted the center $36 million over five years.[4]
Organization[edit]
ESSIC operates within the College of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences (CMNS) at UMD. It shares faculty with the UMD Departments of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science, Geology, and Geographical Sciences. Through its relationship to the Department of Geographical Sciences, ESSIC is also affiliated with the UMD College of Behavioral and Social Science (BSOS) and its departments and programs.[5]
Research[edit]
ESSIC prioritizes projects within six major research themes: atmospheric composition and processes (aerosol/cloud physics), atmospheric chemistry/carbon cycle, the cryosphere, hydrometeorology/precipitation retrieval, hydrology/land surface processes, numerical modeling/data assimilation. This research falls under one of two categories: Earth observation or predictive models. Earth observation uses satellite technology to examine the atmosphere, ocean, land, and vegetation with special attention towards temperature, humidity, and chemical composition changes. Predictive models use numerical analysis how the Earth system changes, which encapsulates subjects like ecology, geology, meteorology and oceanography.[6]
CISESS[edit]
ESSIC also administers the Cooperative Institute for Satellite Earth System Studies (CISESS) was created in June 2019 through an agreement between UMD and NOAA. CISESS is hosted by ESSIC and builds on NOAA's long-term partnership with UMD, which includes the Cooperative Institute for Climate and Satellites from 2009 to 2019 and the Cooperative Institute for Climate Studies from 1984 to 2009.[7]CISESS performs collaborative research aimed at enhancing NOAA's ability to use satellite observations and Earth System models to advance the national climate mission, including monitoring, understanding, predicting and communicating information on climate variability and change.[8]
