The Earthshot Prize is a prize awarded annually from 2021 to 2030, to five winners each year whose evidence-based solutions substantially help the environment. The award is given by the Royal Foundation, headquartered in London, England.

The Earthshot Prize was created in 2020 by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge after two years of research.[1] The winners will be selected by the Earthshot Prize Council, a global team spanning six continents, including the Duke of Cambridge. Each winner will be awarded £1 million.[2]

The prize is backed by an alliance of philanthropic and sustainable development organisations, which include the Aga Khan Development Network, Bloomberg Philanthropies, DP World, Dubai Expo 2020, the Jack Ma Foundation, the WWF, the Green Belt Movement, Greenpeace, and Conservation International.[3]

Goals and nomination process[edit]

The prize is centered around five goals, named "Earthshots":[4]

  • Protect and restore nature
  • Clean our air
  • Revive our oceans
  • Build a waste-free world
  • Fix our climate

Each area is supported by the UN Sustainable Development Goals and scientifically agreed international measures.[5] Submissions are open for solutions "on every level", to any individual, team, organisation, or government with workable solutions toward achieving the Earthshots.[6] The Earthshot Prize Council is responsible for determining a winner for each goal every year.[7] The council is made up of thirteen members: The Duke of Cambridge, Queen Rania of Jordan, Cate Blanchett, Christiana Figueres, Dani Alves, David Attenborough, Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim, Indra Nooyi, Jack Ma, Naoko Yamazaki, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Shakira and Yao Ming.[8] There is a five-stage process to select a winner for each Earthshot, designed alongside the Centre for Public Impact.[9] Nominations will be screened with an independent assessment process run by Deloitte.[10] A panel of experts will made recommendations to the Prize Council, who select the final winners, narrowed from fifteen finalists.[11]
