East African Holding
East African Holding is an Ethiopian industrial conglomerate with roots dating back to 1891[1][2]. Founded by Bizenu Cheru, the company began as a commodity trading enterprise and has since evolved into a diversified group with operations spanning multiple sectors[3]. East African Holding is currently chaired by Buzuayehu T. Bizenu.[3]
History
The business traces its origins to a trading enterprise established in 1891. During the 20th century the family expanded activities into real estate and coffee processing. In the 1970s, assets were nationalized under the Derg; the family later re-established commercial activities and, under the leadership of Buzuayehu T. Bizenu, expanded into general trading and manufacturing.[4]
Operations
East African Holding’s subsidiaries have included companies in consumer goods manufacturing, packaging, transport, cement production, mining, real estate development and agribusiness.[5] The group was a partner in the Lemi National Cement project, a greenfield cement plant inaugurated in September 2024.[6][7] The project has been reported in industry press and international news agencies as among the country’s largest by production capacity.[8][9]
Leadership
Buzuayehu T. Bizenu serves as the founder and chairman of East African Holding.[10]
Recognition
East African Holding and its companies have been noted in industry and local press for tax awards and participation in initiatives such as the African Hidden Champions program; independent reporting is available for some of these recognitions.[1]
