On Thursday 27 October 2016, a Boeing 737-700 operating as Eastern Air Lines Flight 3452 skidded off the runway at LaGuardia Airport in New York City. None of the 48 people on board the aircraft were injured. The aircraft stopped safely due to the EMAS system placed along the runway.

Aircraft[edit]

The aircraft involved was a Boeing 737-7L9, registered N278EA. The aircraft, built in 1998,[1] had previously served with Maersk Air, Sterling Airlines, and Moskovia Airlines before being acquired by Eastern in 2015. For the majority of 2016, the aircraft was in service for the Donald Trump presidential campaign, acting as the transport for Vice Presidential candidate Mike Pence. Previous to the runway excursion, members of the press riding on the aircraft noted that N278EA had a tendency to land roughly, causing some to joke about the plane's eventual crash.[2]

Accident[edit]

Following a campaign stop in Fort Dodge, Iowa, the aircraft departed for a fundraising dinner in New York City with 48 people on board, including Governor Pence. The flight was initially delayed by a ground stop at LaGuardia airport, but soon took off, arriving in New York shortly before 8:00 PM. Upon landing, the aircraft began fishtailing back and forth before eventually coming to a stop beyond the edge of Runway 22[3] with the aid of LaGuardia's engineered materials arrestor system. No one on board the airplane was injured, and damage to the airplane was minimal.[3]
