Eastern Iraq

Eastern Iraq consists of Diyala, Wasit, and Maysan Governorate.

It borders Iran and makes up the majority of the Iran-Iraq border.

The major cities are Kut, Amarah, and Baqubah.

Demographics[edit]

Wasit Governorate[edit]

The population is about 1,500,000. The majority ethnic group are Arabs. The marshes have traditionally been home to many Marsh Arabs. The Badra District is populated by Feyli Kurds. A small Lurish community exists east of Kut. The majority religion in Wasit is Shia Islam.[1]

Diyala Governorate[edit]

Diyala is a diverse governorate, consisting of Sunni Arabs, Shia Arabs, Sunni Kurds, Shia Kurds, Sunni Turkmen, and Shia Turkmen.

Feyli Kurds make up 32% of Diyala, Sunni Kurds make up 3%, Sunni Turkmen make up 6%, Shia Turkmen make up 1%, Sunni Arabs make up 50%, and Shia Arabs make up 8%.[2]

Maysan Governorate[edit]

Maysan Governorate has a Shia Arab majority and a small population of Mandeans and Christians. It is covered in the south by many Mesopotamian Marshes, and has traditionally been home to many Marsh Arabs.[3]

Geography and climate[edit]

Eastern Iraq has a Hot desert climate and is mostly grassy lowlands with some marshes in the southeast.[4]
