Ebenato, also known as Ebenator[1][2], is a town in the Mbanese Community of Nnewi South Local Government Area in Anambra State. Its geographic location coordinates are Latitude:5.93136N Longitude:6.92272E and Zip Code is 435104.[3] The town is made up of three autonomous villages namely Ubaha, Umunnama, and Umuonyeukpa. The name 'Ebenato' means three places to identify with the three autonomous villages and was coined by the Anglican community in 1918 for efficient administration purposes.[4]
Political strength
Ebenato has one political ward[5] with 12 polling units as at the 2019 Nigeria general elections.[6].
Orthodox Churches
The two main legacy Christian churches in Ebenato are St. Mathew's Catholic Church, a parish which was opened in 1913[7] by Fr. Bubendorf and St. Andrew's Anglican Church which became a District on 23rd December 1997, and it is presently made up of other Churches namely: Church of Pentecost, Ebenato; and St. Philip's Anglican Church, Ebenato.[8]
Notable Events
- Mr. & Mrs. Elijah Nwachukwu became the first couple to wed in a church in Ebenato in 1923. The church was St. Andrew's Anglican Parish.
Notable People
- Reverend Daniel N.C. Okeke of Nanka as the first Superintendent of St. Andrew's Anglican Parish Ebenato.
- Father JohnPaul Kodiri Columbus Obiaeri[9] is the first indigenous Catholic Reverend to be ordained in the United States.
- Mr. Jasper Nwandu is the first university graduate of Ebenato and the rest of the Mbanese communities. He graduated from University in 1954.
- Dr. Mrs. Ifeoma Orizu (née Nwandu) is the first female medical doctor of Ebenato and the rest of the Mbanese communities.
- Mr. Anele 'James' Mbaoma of Umuonyeukpa village is the first indigene of Ebenato to embrace Christianity in 1911. He was of the Anglican faith.
- Professor Sam Uzochukwu[10] is the first Professor of Ebenato and the rest of the Mbanese communities.[11]
- Izunna Okafor[12] is an award-winning writer and Igbo Language Activist. He has published works including novels and online articles.
