Ecostore is a New Zealand company that sells home cleaning and personal care products. Established in 1993 by Malcolm and Melanie Rands, the Auckland-based company distributes products through supermarkets, organic grocery stores, wholesale merchants, and eCommerce.[1] The Kraus family came onboard as investors in the early 2000s. The Rands sold their final stake in the company in 2016,[2] and it is now led by Pablo Kraus as its CEO.[3]

History

The company was founded in 1993 by Malcolm and Melanie Rands on a permaculture eco-village on New Zealand’s Northland Region coast.[4] Ecostore began as a mail-order business and moved to Auckland in 1997, opening its flagship store in Freemans Bay, and began selling in New Zealand supermarkets in 2002. In 2004, Ecostore started selling in Australia, and from 2010 expanded into Asian markets including China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines.[5] Ecostore is also sold in the UK and distributed in marine channels in the Mediterranean.

Products

Ecostore offers laundry, dishwashing, cleaning, personal care, oral care, and baby care products. Many products are available in refill format, which enables consumers to reuse their original packaging to reduce the overall environmental impact of product distribution and decrease plastic use.[6] Ecostore product labels feature artwork by New Zealand artist John Reynolds.[7]

Packaging innovation

Ecostore strives to innovate in developing sustainable packaging solutions. The company uses renewable, refillable, and recyclable sugarcane-based plastics in its packaging to reduce its carbon footprint.[8] Its retail packaging is made from a mix of sugarcane and recycled plastics.[9] The company has offered refill solutions in New Zealand since 1997, allowing consumers to refill their product bottles instead of buying new ones. Today, Ecostore has over 200 refill stations worldwide to minimize packaging waste through bulk formats and refill solutions.[10]
