Edgar M. Marble (November 13, 1838 – December 25, 1908) was an American lawyer, Civil War veteran, and government official who served as the United States Commissioner of Patents from 1880 to 1883.[1][2][3][4]
Early life and career
Marble was born near Meridian, New York, and attended Monroe Collegiate Institute. He began teaching and became principal of a high school in Ionia, Michigan. During the American Civil War, he served in Michigan regiments and became adjutant of the Sixth Michigan Infantry and Heavy Artillery.[2]
Government service
After the war, Marble served as clerk of Ionia County, Michigan, and later as a law clerk in the United States Department of the Interior. He became an examiner-in-chief in the Patent Office and assistant attorney general for the Department of the Interior. He was appointed commissioner of patents on April 28, 1880, and served until 1883. He later served as Commissioner of Indian Affairs.[2]
Later career
Marble resigned from federal service in 1883 to join the Northern Pacific Railway. He later practiced patent law with his sons.[2]
