Edward Earle was an American politician who served as the 16th Mayor of Worcester, Massachusetts for one year in 1871.[1]

Earle was born in Leicester, Massachusetts on February 10, 1811.[2][3] His great-great-grandfather was Ralph Earle, one of the original settlers of Leicester. His father died when he was eight years old, at which time his mother married his uncle Henry.[4]

Earle was educated at Leicester Academy and at the Friends School in Providence, Rhode Island. He came to Worcester in 1832 and entered into a partnership in the iron and steel business with Joseph Pratt under the firm name of Pratt & Earle.[4]

In 1843, Earle was elected selectman of Worcester, and was an alderman in 1853. In 1871, he was elected Mayor, serving one year to close out James Blake's term. While mayor, Earle was interested in the anti-slavery movement, visiting the South once as a member of the Friends Committee to look after the welfare of the freemen. He was also a founding member of the American Social Science Association.[4]

Edward Earle died on May 19, 1877[3] and was buried in Rural Cemetery in Worcester.[2]
