The Edward Hanmer Memorial Chase was a National Hunt Graded Limited handicap chase in England. It was run at Haydock Park over a distance of 3 miles (4,828 metres), and it was scheduled to take place each year in November.
The race is named in honour of Sir Edward Hanmer (1893–1977), the owner of Royal Frolic, who won the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1976.
The race was known as the Sundew Chase before 1977 and was run as a handicap before 1972. It was run as a limited handicap for the first time in 1978.[1]
In the early eighties the race was the first three mile pattern chase of the season for the senior performers and was run as a handicap with a weight range limited to 21 pounds.[2] It often attracted horses aimed at the Cheltenham Gold Cup[3] and the 1982 Gold Cup winner, Silver Buck, won the race in four consecutive years.[4]
The race had Listed status prior to 2000 when it became a Grade 3 race, raised to Grade 2 the following year. During this period it attracted runners such as former Cheltenham Gold Cup winner See More Business.[5]
From 2005 the race was replaced in the calendar by the Grade 1 Betfair Chase (Lancashire Chase) over the same course and distance. Haydock effectively exchanged a couple of Grade Two chases (the Tommy Whittle Chase was also downgraded) for a single Grade One chase.[6] The "Edward Hanmer" name was then given to a Class C two mile handicap chase run at the same meeting, but was not used at all after 2007.
