Edward J. Brenner (born June 26, 1923) was an American chemical engineer, patent attorney, and government official who served as the United States Commissioner of Patents from 1964 to 1969.[1][2][3][4][5]
Early life and career
Brenner was born in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees in chemical engineering and a law degree from the University of Wisconsin. He served in the United States Army on a radiological safety team for the Bikini Atoll nuclear tests and later worked as an engineer and patent attorney for Standard Oil of New Jersey's Esso Research and Engineering Company.[2]
Commissioner of Patents
President Lyndon B. Johnson appointed Brenner commissioner of patents, and he took the oath of office on March 11, 1964. Brenner emphasized administrative changes intended to reduce patent application pendency, which the USPTO notes was approximately three years and rising when he took office.[2]
