Edward P. Romaine is an American politician who is currently serving as the county executive of Suffolk County, New York, since 2024.[2][3][4]
A member of the Republican Party, he had been the town supervisor of Brookhaven most recently in 2012.[5][6]
Early life and education
Romaine graduated and received a bachelor's and master's degrees in history from Adelphi University, and the former C.W. Post campus of Long Island University.[7]
Career
On October 9, 2003, Romaine, the then-Suffolk County Clerk and county then-executive candidate had denied the allegations about the cover up the theft of more than $80,000 from coin-operated copying machines in agency many years ago from his former top aide,[8] an election he ultimately lost to Steve Levy.
In 2012, Romaine has been the town supervisor of Brookhaven.[1]
Campaign
In November 2023, at the age of 76,[1] Romaine won the election as Suffolk County Executive, defeating his opponent, Democrat Dave Calone,[7][9] with 158,452, (57.1%) of the votes.[10]
Political views
In 2008, he was at the rally in support for John McCain as president, when Rudy Giuliani declined to run for president, and said that he would be a great president, and so would McCain.[11]
Romaine is the advocate of the environment and sees it as the top issue. He also advocates to preserve as much open space as possible, particularly reduce fossil fuels and treating wastewater by expanding sewers and high-tech septic systems.[1]
He opposes the 2019 New York bail reform act.[1]
He is also focused on improving public transportation in Suffolk County,[1] which he said is "inadequate" in that county.
He said that "affordable housing is crucial in the future of this island."[1]
Family
His father, Edward T. Romaine, who was a Suffolk County legislator, died on January 10, 2010.[12]
