Edwin S. Holt is a musician and businessman from Tyler, Texas. He was born in Dallas in 1967, but was raised in New London until he started college at the University of Mississippi, and would later transfer to receive a degree in Fine Arts from Texas Christian University. He is best known for his blues hits, including chart-topping[1] songs from his album, "Second Time Around," as both a performer and songwriter, as well as building an accomplished digital marketing firm, located in Tyler, Texas.
Early Life
Edwin Holt grew up in New London, Texas. His father was a dentist in the nearby town of Kilgore, and his mother was a former Kilgore College Rangerette. Edwin was raised by three African American women, whose teachings of black culture, food, and music, would all play a role in his life. “Honey” Louise Bagley had the most influence, as her daughter married a bass player who was part of the Big Bo Thomas blues band in Dallas, Texas. Louise introduced Edwin to the urban streets of Dallas, making him a part of the South Dallas family she knew and loved. Graduating from West Rusk High School in 1985, Holt spent a brief period attending University of Mississippi before transferring to Texas Christian University[2]. It was in Mississippi that Holt discovered his passion for the blues after attending the Mississippi Delta Blues Festival in Greenville, MS at the age of 18.[1]
Music
Edwin's music has been heard on the Sirius-XM Blues Channel, where he's had two hits as a performer and songwriter. His song, "Down to the Bone," reached #1, and "Somebody's Gettin' It," reached #3 on Sirius-XM Radio's "Picks to Click" chart.[1] Both songs appear on the album, "Second Time Around."[1] Edwin has headlined shows from the juke joints of South Dallas (his spiritual home, blues-wise) to the Broadbeach Blues Festival in Australia, and he has opened for legends such as Al Green, Bobby Blue Bland, and the blues monarch himself, B.B. King. He became a regular at venues such as R.L. Griffin's Blues Palace II. After gaining the respect of his peers through years of performances, Holt was eventually asked to take over Johnnie Taylor's backing band after his death in 2000. He achieved a significant milestone when his 2005 album "Second Time Around" topped SiriusXM's Bluesville radio channel. Holt eventually stepped away from touring to spend more time with his family and focus on his design firm in Tyler.[3]. Recently and on tour for two years, Holt leads a new group, The Red Clay Roadhouse, blending blues, bluegrass, roots, and Americana performing locally throughout the South. These days, he spends his time singing in a male gospel chorus at People's Missionary Baptist Church with his youngest son, who plays guitar.
Business
After a successful career with a large Dallas advertising agency and the birth of his second child in 1996, Holt launched his own design firm from his home. Over the past couple of decades, his company, Holt Creative Group, has provided brand development and creative campaigns, designing logos and websites for prominent companies and nonprofits worldwide: ExxonMobil, American Airlines, American Heart Association, EDS, Southern Methodist University, the Dallas Cowboys, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and many others.
