Ernest Ogaga Itiveh, professionally known as Egar Boi (and occasionally styled as #EGARSOUND or EgarBoi), is a Lagos-based Nigerian record producer, singer, songwriter, and sound engineer..[1][2] He rose to prominence as a music producer by crafting several top-charting Afrobeats records, most notably producing Skales's mainstream breakout hit "Ajaga" (2016) featuring Davido and Timaya[3], DJ Kaywise and Tiwa Savage's "Informate" (2017)[4], Ice Prince and Oxlade's popular track "Kolo" (2021)[5], and serving as a primary sound architect for Yemi Alade's heavily acclaimed "Queendoncom" (2021) project[6]
Early life and career
Ernest Ogaga Itiveh was raised in a highly religious Christian household in Nigeria. Both of his parents are pastors. His musical background began heavily in the church, where he learned to play the drums at age seven and mastered the piano by age twelve. By age 11, he was a key instrumentalist and vocalist in his church choir, a foundational experience that shaped his singing and vocal arrangements.[7]
Career
Music Production (2016 - Present)
Egar Boi initially focused on singing and songwriting before acquiring technical skills in sound engineering and audio production. His major breakthrough came in 2016 when he produced the hit single "Ajaga" for Skales[8][9], which featured prominent Nigerian stars Davido and Timaya. He went on to produce another notable track, "Gbefun Onetime," featuring Burna Boy for Skales' sophomore album The Never Say Never Guy.
As a high-profile producer, he has collaborated with a vast array of major Afrobeats artists, including:
Transition to Recording Artist (2019 - Present)
While established behind the mixing board, Egar Boi debuted as a solo artist by blending modern Afrobeats with distinct pop and alternative sensibilities, drawing stylistic comparisons to a fusion of Bruno Mars and Aṣa.
In October 2021, he released his debut official single "Joma."[12] The track, which featured guitar work by Fiokee and production by Mykah, performed well commercially and peaked at number one on Apple Music’s Pop Chill playlist. He followed up his solo efforts with a string of consistent releases, including his 2019 project Give Me Chills, and several singles such as "Comfort," "MAJA," and "ADA".
Musical Style and Influences
Egar Boi's signature production and vocal style are characterized by an upbeat, melodic fusion of Afrobeats with Dance, Electronic, and Pop music. His background as a choir multi-instrumentalist heavily informs his use of live instrumentation, complex vocal layering, and crossover sound arrangements.
