El Meswy is a hip hop artist originally from Alcorcon, Spain. He presently resides in Brooklyn, NY.[1]
Biography[edit]
El Meswy does not believe in frontiers, flags, or boundaries. He is determined to fight racism in all its forms and representations while believing in unity, diversity, and respect.
Raised in Alcorcón, Madrid (Spain), the area with the highest crime rate in Spain's 80s decade, he fell in love with Hip-Hop while many of his peers did it with heroin. A highly conscious MC, proud of his Spanish Moor roots, he became one of the most acclaimed Spanish rhymers after he dropped his first solo album, “Tesis Doctoral” (Boa, 1997). He is also one of the Hip Hop in Spanish pioneers along with the members of his revolutionary Hip-Hop group, El Club de los Poetas Violentos (CPV).
El Meswy holds a PhD in Sociolinguistics by The City University of New York. Previously, he graduated as a social psychologist that was followed by a Master in Education. His career as an entrepreneur with the Latino Hip-Hop clothing brand Bronco Estilo (the first Spanish Hip-Hop clothing line, that had stores in Spain, Brooklyn, and Ghana; it has international distribution) is also well-known, appearing in different TV shows and publications. He also owns his record label, Crudo.
EL Meswy brings beats and lyrics reflecting the 'global hood' vibe and experience filtered by his inner most thoughts, raising your conscience and social awareness but always leaving you entertained and with something you can feel and enjoy. He's creative, original, relaxed and, at times, even sarcastic. His sometimes raw, sometimes smooth, precise delivery imparts wisdom and truth, but always from a deep and insightful critical perspective. Among the many strong characteristics of El Meswy, Brooklyn's "do or die" Bedstuy, is his motto: “NO ME MUERDO LA LENGUA PORQUE DUELE” (I don’t bite my tongue cause it hurts).
Meswy's rude vocals, "chulo" style, charisma and verbal skills have already shared the mic with artist such as Dead Prez, The Beatnuts, Masta Ace, Jeru the Damaja, NORE, Cappadonna, AG, and many others, both on stage and tracks. He has a well-known rep of burning stages. Shows all over Spain, Europe, Mexico and NY among others, have proven that he has the skillful experience and enough adrenaline to make his audience identify themselves with what he rhymes about. He makes you travel sometimes at an amazing speed, sometimes with a killer slow flow, but always with every kind of detail through his, one after another, Spanish Hip-Hop classics. With an amazing underground international fan base, being as popular in his native Spain as in other Latin American countries, he is one of the last pure Hip-Hop in Spanish artists blessing the mic. Skillful story teller, verbal photographer, El Meswy aims to attend with his lyrics to socioeconomic issues related to discrimination and inequity, including racism, sexism, and classicism, with a special focus on the stereotypes, miss-representation, and exploitation of Latinos/as in the US. Critical to the American experience as an immigrant, as well as to any abusive government policies worldwide.
El Meswy has produced international anthems crying for (intellectual and artistic) independence like “Semen” or the popular "CRUDO", always keeping the essence of resistance through transgression represented by the street soldier spirit while finding the common DNA to worldwide "barrios".
In his album “Españoles”, he seeks to critically analyze Spain and its ideological extension through right-wing politics in Latin America. Released November 2009, it includes lyrical and instrumental jewels.
He has released 9 solo albums:
