El gato con botas

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

El gato con botas (Puss in Boots) is an opera in one act and five scenes with music by Xavier Montsalvatge and a Spanish libretto by Néstor Luján [es; de], based on the fairy tale of the same name by Charles Perrault. Composed in the summer of 1947, it premiered at the Gran Teatro del Liceo in Barcelona on 10 January 1948, conducted by Carlos Suriñach.

This was the first of Montsalvatge's three operas, the other two being Una voce in off in 1962 and Babel 46 in 1968, though the latter wasn't premiered until 2002. The opera is still occasionally performed, especially for children.

El gato con botas was not professionally recorded until 2002 by the Catalonian music label Columna Música, featuring the Orquestra Simfònica del Gran Teatre del Liceu conducted by Antoni Ros-Marbà. The recording was released in Spain in 2003 and the United States in 2004, receiving a nomination for Best Opera Recording at the 47th Annual Grammy Awards in 2005.

According to Operabase, El gato con botas was the most performed Spanish opera (including zarzuelas) in Spain during the 2012/2013 and 2014/2015 seasons.[citation needed]

Instrumentation

The opera was written for 3 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 trumpets, 4 French horns, 2 trombones, tuba, harp, piano or celesta, percussion and strings.
