Elddis Transport (Consett) Limited is a British road haulage company based in Consett, County Durham.[3]

History[edit]

Origins[edit]

The origins of Elddis Transport stretch back to the 19th century when Thomas Cook purchased his first horse and cart in 1881. After the death of Thomas Cook in 1942 his son Siddle (Elddis is Siddle spelt backwards) took over the majority of the business and created Siddle C Cook Limited. This grew to be one of the largest privately owned heavy haulage companies in the country before it was sold to the Edinburgh-based shipping company Tayforth Limited in 1964.[4]

Company Formation[edit]

Elddis Transport was formed in 1971 when Geoffrey Cook, Siddle's oldest son bought a local haulage company with 6 vehicles and 11 trailers. Originally the main business was the transport of steel from the local steel works in Consett. With the closure of the steel works in 1980 the business changed direction and developed into a specialist in the movement of consumer goods, which is where it remains today.

Recent History[edit]

In October 2018, Elddis Transport joined the Palletforce network after a 17-year hiatus from pallet networks.[5]

In April 2019, it was announced that Elddis Transport have started to use TruAnalysis for clearer compliance control.[6]

In July 2019. Elddis Transport announced that it increased its turnover and profit in 2018, despite getting a drubbing from the Beast from the East. Turnover rose to £27.4m from £26.9m in 2017 and pre-tax profit rose by 37.5% during the period to £658,338.[7]
