Elene Naveriani
Elene Naveriani (born 1985) is a Georgian film director, now based in Switzerland.[1]
Life and career
In 2003, they graduated from the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts in monumental painting. Following a Master's Degree in Critical Curatorial Cybermedia, Naveriani also received a Bachelor in Film at the HEAD - Geneva School of Art and Design.[1]
Their first feature film, Me Mzis Skivi Var Dedamicaze (2017) had its premiere at IFF Rotterdam and has received several awards globally.[2] Their latest feature film, Wet Sand (2021) premiered at Locarno Film Festival, achieving the Best Actor's Prize[3] and wide critical acclaim. Currently, they are writing two feature films. The first is based on Georgian feminist novel Blackbird, Blackbird, Blackberry by Tamta Melashvili. The second is about Saint Nino, who brought Christianity to Georgia.[4]
In an interview for Wet Sand, Naveriani stated that studying and making films in Switzerland has given them the freedom to create Georgian stories which may otherwise not have been possible without Swiss support.[4]
