The Elephant & Castle fire broke out on 28 June 2021 near Elephant & Castle railway station in south London shortly after reports of an explosion at nearby railway arches.[1][2][3]
Events
- The fire was first reported at 13:43 according to London Fire Brigade.[1][2][3]
- Metropolitan Police first received a call about a fire at 13:47 on Elephant Road.[1][2][3]
- Ben Lovell, a doctor specialising in acute medicine, tweeted that he saw "lots of black smoke, then an explosion and large fireball erupted".[1][2][3] He was tweeting and taking images from a tall building.[1][2][3]
- Lovell first tweeted images of smoke at 13:50.[1][2][3]
- About 14:00 Lovell tweeted "I’m now engulfed in black smoke so can’t see any more" and also expressed concern for stallholders in the area.[1][2][3]
- At 14:40 Lovell tweeted "Smoke dissipating, no further visible fire. Whole central Elephant and Castle cordoned off by police and other emergency crew who are redirecting car and pedestrian traffic with calm professionalism. Hope everyone is OK."[1][2][3]
Response
London Fire Brigade said three commercial units, six cars and a telephone box were on fire.[1][2][3] It had sent 10 fire engines, and about 100 firefighters were fighting the blaze.[1][2][3]
Southwark police said the incident was not believed to be terrorism-related.[1][2][3]
Impact
Local residents were urged to close windows and doors.[1][2][3] Hundreds of residents were evacuated.[1][2][3] Six people were treated at the scene, with one taken to hospital.[1][2][3] Those treated for smoke inhalation included a police officer.[1][2][3]
Trains have stopped running through the area.[1][2][3] Thameslink said trains between Sutton and St Albans and Sevenoaks and Blackfriars were affected.[1][2][3] People have been advised to use buses, Underground or Southeastern services between London Victoria, Peckham Rye, London Bridge and Nunhead.[1][2][3]
Metropolitan Police advised people to avoid the area and said "significant road closures" were in place.[1][2][3]
Southwark Playhouse offered refuge to evacuees.[1][2][3]
