Eliezer Yariv

Professor Eliezer Yariv (born on December 10th, 1949) is an Educational Psychologist, a lecturer and a researcher in the fields of professionally challenging teachers, classroom management and classroom discipline; He is a lecturer at the Gordon academic college in Haifa.

Biography

Yariv was born and raised in 1949 in Kibbutz Dafna of which his parents were among the founders. After his military service as an air patrolman in the Israeli Intelligence Corps, he earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in psychology at the University of Haifa.

In 1987, he served as the Envoy of the Jewish Agency in the city of Rochester, New York.

In 1990, he was appointed as the manager of Educational Psychological service in Hatzor HaGlilit, during which time, he began to research the field of classroom discipline and develop pedagogical methods for classroom management and correction of behavioral problems.

In 1996, he published his first book "Disciplin & dialogue" with"Reches" publishing. In the book, Yariv proposes a short-term intervention format of emotional social learning – one that calls for the defining a significant event, understanding the student's motives and solving the problem to prevent its recurrence.

In 2002, he obtained his PHD in Educational management on the subject of "Managing Challenging Teachers" from The School of Education at the University of Leicester in England. That same year' he began teaching at the Gordon College.

In 2014, he attained the position of Associate Professor of Educational Psychology.

Yariv was a member of the "Botin Foundation's" international research team based at the University of Santander and researched social and emotional learning. He also served as a senior researcher at the "Above Average" Research Institute, which deals with the ranking of academic institutions and curricula in Israel.

In the second decade of the 21st century, apart from academic teaching, he became the center of a thinking and research team at the "Mofet" Institute which deals with classroom management.

Yariv, who lives in Carmiel, is married and has three children. One of his children is Guy Yariv, an expert in teaching rhetoric and public speaking skills.

Research fields

Yariv deals with two research fields: identifying the causes of behavior problems in the classroom and the ways to handle them. In his book "Quiet In Classroom, Please!", he developed a typology that deals with the causes of disorders and difficulties on school; the psychological and personal motives involved in violent behavior , and dealing with the disorders.

The book "I Have Eyes In The Back of my Head" is devoted to the question of dealing with problems and disorders that occur in classroom. Yariv presents a theoretical model of the "Pyramid of Educational Responses," based on an economic principle considering that the system seeks to achieve improvement with minimum effort; First, teachers prefer to ignore the difficulties. Second, teachers try an immediate solution. Then, they respond with a "law and order" approach and finally, they "remove barriers" – to manage a more depth and long-term treatment, with the participation of other professionals. At one's best, intervention may produce "growth", and help to implement the student's potential.

Yariv's second research field concerns teachers personal and professional difficulties, and the ways principals can help those employees.
