Elisabetta Campus (6 October 1960 – 12 November 2014) was a human rights activist, active in Italian Amnesty International and internationally.[1]
Early life, education and career
Elisabetta Campus was born in Perugia on 6 October 1960. She attended the Classic High School and subsequently obtained a law degree from the University of Perugia.[1] Afterwards, she obtained a post-degree certificate as International cooperation project officer and attended programmes on underdevelopment, humanitarian assistance, emergency operations and humanitarian interventions.[1]
From the beginning of the 1980s she worked as an administrative assistant in the Istituto Zooprofilattico of Umbria – Marche Regions, retaining this role throughout her life. She died prematurely on 12 November 2014 in Perugia.[2]
Amnesty International activities
In 1990 Campus started voluntary activities with Perugia's ‘Gruppo Italia 45’,[3] a regional association working on defending human rights with Amnesty International. She also joined Amnesty International's Umbria section; from November 1997 to March 2003 she was the treasurer, from 2004 to 2008 she was appointed as deputy.[1] She continued to volunteer in Umbria until her death.[4]
At the national level, from November 2003 she was a member of the Amnesty International Coordination for North America and Caribbean Islands, of which she later became national responsible. She was a member of the Fund-Raising Commission from February 2008 to April 2009 and from July 2009 to March 2010 she was a member of the Training Commission. She also cooperated with the Coordination for Minors in Amnesty International focused on cases where minors had been sentenced to the death penalty.[5]
Campus's activities also included the defence of native Americans. She spent many summers in South Dakota in the territory of the Lakota Sichangu Oyate (Brulé) to witness spiritual experiences.[6] She worked in strict contact with the spiritual father and spokesperson of the group, Duane Hollow Horn Bear, teacher of the Department of the Lakota Studies of the Sinte Gleska University within the Rosebund Indian Reservation Mission (South Dakota).[5]
Campus left a large amount of documents and photos in both digital and paper forms. This was declared of significant historical importance by the Archives Superintendence of Umbria and Marche Regions.[7][2][8] The digital material includes thousands of computer files related to Amnesty International activities in Italy from 2008 to 2014 including campaigns, circulars, assemblies and general activities reports. A file including all human rights reports of the Guantanamo Bay detention camp, previously restricted, is available for human rights and political science students and interested persons.[6][9]
After her death, her papers and files were collected and are now archived at the Documentation Center for Human Rights of the Umbria Region and the Group 45 of Amnesty International within the Library of San Matteo degli Armeni in Perugia, which carries the name of Elisabetta Campus.[10][11][12]
