Elixir is a historical fiction novel written by Eric Walters. It takes place in the University of Toronto in Toronto, Ontario in the year of 1921.[2] The novel is based off the discovery of insulin by Frederick Banting and Charles Best.[3] The story's was a narrative told by Ruth's point of view.

Plot Summary[edit]

12 year old Ruth and her mother visit the University of Toronto for Ruth's mother work as a custodian.[4] While Ruth is outside studying Spelling Dictation,[5] Dr.Banting, (named after Frederick Banting) a doctor in search for a cure for Diabetes came over and invited her to tea. There, Ruth was horrified when she discovered that Dr. Banting and his assistant Dr. Best(named after Charles Best were testing treatments on dogs. Just outside, a group of protesters called the Ontario Anti-Vivisection were protesting about animal rights. Ruth meets Mellisa Jones, the leader of the Ontario Anti-Vivisection.[6] and Ruth agrees to help them free the dogs. But when Ruth meets Emma, a girl with Diabetes and needs a treatment,[7] Ruth's opinions changed and tried to stop the rescue. When she meets Dr. Banting, she discovered that they were testing the treatment on a dog already in the diabetic coma. They tried the insulin and had succeeded.
