Ella Raidel (born 22 August 1970) is an Austrian filmmaker and visual artist. In her interdisciplinary works – films, videos, writings – she focuses on the socio-cultural aspects of globalization, urbanization, and the representation of images. Her hybrid practice aims to create a discursive space for filmmaking, art, and research. She is currently an Assistant Professor at NTU Singapore in a joint appointment between ADM School of Art, Design and Media and WKWSCI The School of Communication and Information.
Raidel’s works have participated in international biennials and exhibitions, such as Taipei Biennale (2016), 1st Asian Biennale/ Guangdong Museum of Art (2015), Bi-City Architecture Biennale/Hong Kong (2015), Transmediale/Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin (2013), Shanghai Biennale (2012/13), Asian Triennale Manchester, Discovering the Other/National Palace Museum Taipei, Based Upon: True Stories/Witte de Wit Rotterdam and presented at numerous International film festivals, including IFFR International Film Festival Rotterdam, CPH:DOX Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival, DOK Leipzig, Hot Docs Canada, and Chicago International Film Festival.
Education
Ella Raidel received her Ph.D. in Art & Cultural Studies in 2009 at the University of Art and Design Linz, Austria, writing her dissertation on the films of Tsai Ming-Liang. She was a Post-doc Research Fellow at Academia Sinica, Taipei/Taiwan, Institute for Chinese Literature and Philosophy and has been awarded the Elise Richter PEEK (FWF), Senior-Postdoctoral Fellowship, Institute for Fine Arts and Cultural Studies/Experimental Arts, University of Art and Design Linz, Austria.
