Ellen van Loon
Ellen van Loon is a Dutch architect. She is a partner at the Office for Metropolitan Architecture in Rotterdam.[1]

Life and Work
Ellen van Loon (b. 1963) was born in Hulst, The Netherlands.[2][3] She holds an architecture diploma from the Delft University of Technology. Before joining OMA in 1998, Van Loon worked for Foster and Partners in Berlin, where she was involved in the design of the Reichstag building.[4]
Van Loon became a partner at OMA in 2002 while working on the Embassy of the Netherlands, Berlin, and has overseen a variety of high-profile projects for the firm,[5] such as New Court Rothschild Bank in London (2011); Brighton College, School of Science and Sport in East Sussex (2020); and the refurbishment of the Kaufhaus des Westens in Berlin (ongoing).
Among her most notable contributions:
- Embassy of the Netherlands, Berlin (2003), recipient of the European Union Mies van der Rohe Award in 2005[6];
- Casa da Música in Porto (2005), recipient of the 2007 RIBA European Award;
- the Prada Transformer Pavilion in Seoul (2009);
- New Court, the headquarters of the Rothschild & Co investment bank in London (2011);
- the interior and exterior design of Maggie's Centre in Glasgow (2011);
- G-Star Raw Headquarters in Amsterdam (2014);
- Lab City CentraleSupélec in Paris (2017);
- Rijnstraat 8 in The Hague (2017);
- BLOX / Danish Architecture Centre in Copenhagen (2018);
- Qatar National Library in Doha (2018);
- the new building for Brighton College, School of Science and Sport in East Sussex, England (2020), recipient of two 2021 RIBA awards, including the RIBA National Award[7]
- The Factory, Manchester, the new home of the Manchester International Festival (2017 - ongoing);
- Palais de Justice in Lille (2017 - ongoing);
- The masterplan and refurbishment of the Kaufhaus des Westens in Berlin (2016 - ongoing);
- New department store and hotel for the KaDeWe Group in Vienna (2018 - ongoing).
Awards
In 2013, Van Loon was nominated for the Women Architect of the Year Award by Architects' Journal.
