Ellery Balcombe (born 15 October 1999) is an English footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Brentford. He has represented England at various youth levels and has been called up to the under-21 side.

Club career

Brentford

Balcombe came through the youth ranks at Brentford, first joining the Brentford B squad in 2016.[1] He played 50 times at this level, and during this time he received his first call-ups to the England U-18 team.[1] Balcombe made it into a senior matchday squad for the first time during the 2017–2018 season for the league match against match against Fulham on 2 December 2017.[1] He was also part of the squad for the FA Cup match against Notts County on 6 January 2018.[1] However, he did not appear in either of these matches.

Loan to Boreham Wood

Brentford sent Balcombe on loan to National League side Boreham Wood at the start of the the 2018–19 season.[1] After playing eight league games for the side, Balcombe was forced to return to his parent club early at the end of December 2018 after he received a knee injury while on international duty.[1]

Loan to Viborg FF

Following his time with England at the Toulon Tournament in the summer of 2019, Balcombe was sent on another loan spell with Danish second-tier side Viborg FF on deadline day.[1][2] He played eight league matches for Viborg and was awarded the Man of the Match award on his home debut, although he was sent off during one match.[3][2] Balcombe's loan spell was again cut short when he received a back injury, and he returned to Brentford in January 2020.[1] Viborg signed fellow England U-21 goalkeeper Brandon Austin to replace him.[4]

International career

Balcombe was first called up to play for England's youth teams in 2017, when he was a part of the U-18 squad for the Toulon Tournament which was won by England.[1][5] In 2018, Balcombe played for the U-19's at the UEFA Under-19 Championship.[3] He also played four times for the U-20 team in 2019 when he was only 17.[3][2] He received his first call-up to the U-21 team in September 2019 while playing for Viborg, and he has continued to feature in U-21 squads since, although he is yet to make an appearance.[2][6]
