Elliott Haimoff

Elliott H. Haimoff, Ph.D. (born 1955; Los Angeles, California, US) is a Cambridge-educated primatologist and biologist. Haimoff is a renowned expert on the gibbon ape, a primate on the verge of extinction. In 1991, Haimoff founded a TV documentary production company called Global Science Productions, in Beverly Hills, California.

Early life and education

Haimoff received a Ph.D. in Biology from Pembroke College (UK). His extensive research on the Hoolock Gibbon Gibbon–human last common ancestor as the last remaining ancestral link to humans, led to a coordinated effort of mutual government cooperation to ensure the species' survival, saving the apes from extinction Hoolock gibbon.

Famed animal behaviorist David Chivers David Chivers supervised Haimoff's doctoral studies.

Evolutionary biologist and Sr. Curator of Chicago’s Field Museum of Natural History, Dr. Robert Martin, served as Haimoff's official Ph.D. academic examiner. Haimoff co-authored Professor Martin's book on human sexual behavior, How We Do It. Global Science Productions later developed a documentary film about the book The Nature of Sex.

Haimoff served as a research professor Professor in Biology at UCLA, leading studies to determine best practices to protect endangered gibbons. Haimoff's articles on gibbon behavior in the wild published in scientific journals are considered as the definitive treatises in the field of primate biology.

Career

As researcher, writer and producer at KCET-TV (PBS/Los Angeles), in their Science and Society Unit, Haimoff, along with senior producer Roger Bingham, developed several science and biology discovery TV segments, including "Fat City", "The Thrifty Gene" and "Food for Thought".

Dr. Haimoff has remained focused on producing documentary films about gibbons and other endangered wildlife along with space exploration, cosmic radiation, black holes, quasars (“Matter of Fact”), DNA fingerprinting and the future of genome-sequencing computing.
