Humanity survival[edit]

Musk has described climate change as the greatest threat to humanity after artificial intelligence.[1] He has advocated for a carbon tax[2] and is the sponsor of the $100 million carbon removal XPRIZE competition.[3] Because of then-president Donald Trump stance on climate change and his decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement,[4][5] Musk resigned in 2017 from both Trump's business advisory councils.[6]

Musk has long promoted the colonization of Mars and argues that humanity should become a "multiplanetary species".[7] He has envisaged the use of nuclear weapons to terraform Mars.[8][9] He envisioned enacting a direct democracy on Mars with a system in which more votes would be required to create laws than remove them.[10]

Musk has also voiced concerns about human population decline.[11][12] Speaking at The Wall Street Journal's CEO Council session in 2021, Musk stated that declining birth rates and population is one of the biggest risks to human civilization.[13]
