The Tesla Roadster is a car which was produced from 2008. Tesla delivered approximately 2,450 Roadsters worldwide between February 2008 and December 2012. Elon Musk's midnight cherry Tesla Roadster is Elon Musk's own private car. The car is VIN #000686 and was produced in 2009.[citation needed]
Mission[edit]
The car will be launched in January 2018 with the first Falcon Heavy on a Mars trajectory.[3] There were unconfirmed reports that the mission was made up, but Musk and many SpaceX employees later said to media that the payload would be real.[4] According to Elon Musk, it could stay drifting in space for one billion years. The sound system on board the car will will play a song called Space Oddity by David Bowie.[2] This launcher demonstration makes the Roadster the first automobile planned to be launched towards Mars.
