Elsa Shiju (born November 4, 2008), is an American Space Enthusiast with the goal of being selected for future human spaceflight to Mars. Ever since she was a little girl, Elsa Shiju has had her heart set on the stars. At only 3 years old, she decided to become an astronaut and be one of the first people to go to Mars.[1]
Early Life and Education
Shiju was born on November 4, 2008 in League City, Texas. She is currently a freshman in a League City private school. Ever since she was just 3 years old, the little girl said to her father, “Daddy, I want to be an astronaut, and be one of the people to go to Mars.” Her father had no idea that this little girl’s offhand statement would become real, making a meaningful lifelong achievement.[2]
Shiju attended her first space camp in Huntsville, Alabama at age seven and went on to attend five more.[3] She also attended a Cosmosphere camp in Hutchinson, Kansas. At 11, she attended Virginia Space Flight Academy and National Flight Academy. At 12, Shiju earned her Advanced Scuba Certification. In 2019, she graduated from Space Camp, Huntsville, Alabama, United States.[4]
Career
In 2017, Shiju was featured in the 2017 documentary The Mars Generation. Shiju self-published Do You Want to Be an Astronaut (2021) about her passion for space flight and has written for The Journal of Young Physicists. In 2020, she was featured in World Woman Hour #ShesMyHero on International Girl's Day. She has also given talks encouraging young girls to pursue careers in STEM.[5][6] In 2019, she travelled 6000 miles inside Texas, speaking to over 10,000 kids and inspired them to find their dream and get involved in STEM.[7]
She is also frequently interviewed to discuss her childhood goal of becoming an astronaut and traveling to Mars.[8] She joined The Mars Generation, an organization that helps young kids to dream and act big. Shiju has also been involved with several space-related products including "Cosmos Sweden Solar System Watches", partnerships with brands such as Alpha Industries, KiwiCo and many more.
Awards
In 2014, Shiju was named as one of the Right Stuff Award Winners, an award given to outstanding trainees by Space Camp. She was honored by Innovation and Tech Today (STEM Today) magazine as a Women in STEM in the science category.[9][4]
