Else Poulsen
Else Poulsen (1955-15 April 2016)
After receiving a BSc in biological sciences, Else Poulsen began working as a field biologist in the early 1980s, and then shifted to Calgary Zoo.[1] There she worked with a variety of animals before beginning to specialize in bears.[1] Her book, Smiling Bears: A Zookeeper Explores the Behavior and Emotional Life of Bears, published in 2009, focused on bear behaviour in captivity. After 18 years at the Calgary Zoo, she moved to Detroit Zoo.[2] In 2000, she won the Zookeeper Excellence Award for bear research from the American Zoo and Aquarium Association’s Bear Taxon Group.[1] In 2002, a polar bear rescued from the Suarez Circus arrived at the zoo.[3] Poulsen recounts the story of this bear’s rehabilitation in Barli’s Story: One Polar Bear’s Amazing Recovery from Life as a Circus Act (2014). Poulsen has authored more than 40 publications on bear behavior, including peer-reviewed articles for scientific journals and technical articles for trade journals. She frequently acted as a consultant and educator for those working with captive animals. She was founding president of the Bear Care Group, a non-profit group dedicated to the continued organization of international bear husbandry conferences, programs, publications, and resources for bear caregivers at sanctuaries, rehabilitation facilities, and zoos.[1]
