Else Wenz-Viëtor was born April 30, 1882, in Sorau (now Żary) (Lower Lusatia) and grew up with her grandparents in Freiburg im Breisgau.
From her grandfather she developed a love of plants and animals, later her favorite motifs. As a largely self-taught artist, she attended the School of Applied Arts in Munich and joined an association of women artists. In the Schwabing artists' quarter she portrayed well-known artistic personalities and during this time she married the painter Carl Rehm. They divorced in 1913 and she later married the architect Paul Wenz.
In 1903 she illustrated her first of a total of over 150 books, "The Book of the Child." From 1909 she worked for the publishing house Alfred Hahn, creating illustrations for Auerbach's German children's calendar. She also worked as a freelancer for German arts and crafts workshops, designing interiors, wallpaper, glasses, and other items. In 1920, the artist began a very productive collaboration with the Oldenburg Stalling Verlag.
Her daughter Hedda Obermaier-Wenz received her mother's graphic training and drew in an almost identical style. She created illustrations for about 60 children's books and was at the Kunstverein Werdenfelser Künstler e. V. in Werdenfelser Land as a painter.
