Elshan Ghasimi
Elshan Ghasimi (born 1981 in Tehran, Iran) is a Tar virtuoso, composer, performance artist, and master of classical Persian music.
Life and career
At the age of nine, Elshan Ghasimi began studying classical Persian music at the Tehran Conservatory of Music. She studied with Majid Vasefi, Reza Vohdani, and Fariborz Azizi as well as the masters Houshang Zarif and Hossein Alizadeh. At 17, she became the youngest member of the Iranian National Orchestra (1998–2006), which was under the direction of Farhad Fakhreddini.
During her studies, Ghasimi deepened her knowledge of radīf (repertoire of Iranian classical music), improvisation, and tar playing with masters such as Mohammad Reza Lotfi, Dariush Pirniakan, and Dariush Talai. In Baku, Azerbaijan, she continued her education by learning Mugham (a form of traditional Azerbaijani music) and the Caucasian Tar.
In her own compositions, Ghasimi takes up classical, literary themes and combines music, performance, and conceptual art. Ghasimi has lived between Tehran and Berlin since 2016. She has given concerts at the Radialsystem Berlin, the Cologne Philharmonic, the Hamburg Resonanzraum, the Lettrétage in Berlin, and the PODIUM Festival Esslingen among other venues.
