Elvernoy (Albie) Johnson is the State Librarian at the State Library of Massachusetts, the first African American to serve in the position. Since joining the State Library, Johnson has focused on increasing public access to the library's historical treasures, especially through the library's long-term digitization efforts.[1]
Education
Johnson majored in communications at the University of Massachusetts Boston and went on to obtain her M.Ed. from Emmanuel College and her M.L.S. from Simmons College.[2]
Massachusetts State Librarian
Appointed by Governor Deval Patrick in 2007,[3] Johnson became the first African American to hold the position of Massachusetts State Librarian and the sixth African American State Librarian in the United States. During her tenure as State Librarian, Johnson has overseen a major restoration project at the State Library of Massachusetts[4] and has focused on making the State Library’s historical treasures more accessible to the public.[1]
Johnson has secured funding to enhance the preservation capabilities of the State Library through both employee training[5] and also the acquisition of resources such as preservation and encapsulation supplies, environmental monitoring devices,[6] and archival storage materials.[7] She has also secured funds for several projects to both preserve and digitize collections within the State Library, including manuscript collections, legislative and municipal document collections,[8] and the original architectural plans of the Massachusetts State House. In 2008 Johnson partnered with the university librarian at UMass Boston to digitize the State Library's collection of Massachusetts session laws dating from 1620 and to provide free access to the laws in the State Library's DSpace online repository.[9]
In 2014 Johnson led the project to conserve and digitize William Bradford’s manuscript Of Plimoth Plantation, held by the State Library.[10] Under Johnson's leadership, the manuscript was conserved and digitized by the Northeast Document Conservation Center.[11] In 2015 the manuscript was featured in the documentary film "The Pilgrims," which aired on the PBS series American Experience.[12]
As State Librarian of Massachusetts, Johnson has overseen the curation of dozens of exhibitions that feature items from the State Library of Massachusetts' collections.[13] In 2019 she oversaw the installation and design of a special display case in the library that allows for the safe and secure display of the library’s most rare and fragile items.[14]
Johnson serves as a Board Member of the Massachusetts Records Conservation Board,[15] the Northeast Document Conservation Center,[16] and the Boston Library Consortium.[17] She has also served as a two-term president of the Fenway Library Consortium [2] and serves as a member of the University of San Francisco's Professional Development Leave Committee.[18]
