Emenike Nyeche Wami[edit]

Emenike Nyeche Wami.[1][2] is a Nigerian Petrochemical Engineer and Scientist specializing in Catalysis, Reaction Engineering, Oil & Gas Engineering, Chemical Thermodynamics, etc. Wami is a scholar and professor. He is a former head of department and Dean of faculty and post graduate school of Rivers State University (formally Rivers State University of Science and Technology). He is acclaimed the first PhD graduate in Chemical Engineering from the old Rivers State (Rivers and Bayelsa States), Nigeria. He was Mayor of Port Harcourt Local Government Area (1987-1989). He is the serving President –General, Ogbakor Ikwerre Cultural Organisation World-Wide[3].

Background and education[edit]

Born on July 19, 1945 at Oroworukwo in Port Harcourt Local Government Area of Rivers State, Wami attended Baptist High School (formally Government Rehabilitation School), Borikiri, Port Harcourt, where he acquired his GCE A/Level in Pure Maths, Applied Maths and Physics (1969). He studied for his first degree in Kiev State University, Kiev, USSR (1970). Subsequently Wami obtained an MSc from Moscow Oil and Gas Institute (GUBKIN) USSR (1974), and a PhD from Imperial College, (University of London), UK in (1979)[4]

Academic career[edit]

Wami served as research assistant at Imperial College of Science and Technology, London, (1974 – 79). In 1980 he joined the teaching force of  Rivers State University (formally Rivers State University of Science and Technology), Nkoplu-Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt as lecturer 1 and in 1998 became a Professor.

Among other positions held in Rivers State University, Wami was Dean, Faculty of Engineering (2001 -  2004 & 2009 – 2011); Dean, Post Graduate School (2004 – 2005); member, University senate (1984 - 87; 1991 – 94, 1999 to date); Ag. HOD, Chemical/Petrochemical Engineering department[5] (1984 – 87 & 1991 -1994); member, University Governing Council (2003 – 2005;2006-2011); Chairman, Senate Ceremonial Committee (2007 -  2012).

He was Rector, Rivers State Polytechnic (now Ken Saro Wiwa Polytechnic) Bori. (1994 -1998); Visiting Professor/Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Federal University, Wukari, Tarabe State, Nigeria (2013 – 2016); Adjunct Professor, Niger Delta University, Amassoma, Bayelsa State, Nigeria (2010- 2013) and member, Governing Council of Rivers State College of Education – now Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rumuorlumeni, Port Harcourt (2002 – 2005).

Professional engineering career[edit]

Among other positions held in professional engineering division, Professor (Engr.) Wami was Chairman, Rivers-Bayelsa States Chapter, Editor in-Chief, JNSChE, Deputy National President (2012-2014) and National President of Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineering (2014-2016)[6][7]. He served as Senior Research Advisor in Shell Petroleum Development Company (2005 -2006). He is the Vice-Chairman, Del-Sigma Petroleum Nigeria Limited[8], a Marginal Field Operator (OML 55); and the Director /Principal Consultant of Integrated Engineering Consultants & Integrated Technical Associates.

Personal life[edit]

Professor Wami is married to Victory Nma Wami. They have four (4) children and grandchildren. He is a member of the Neighbourhood Safety Corps board[9], Rivers State, Nigeria.
